Nawab’s library to turn into literary centre

Gulistan-e-Iram, the royal library of Awadh, may be available for literary programmes soon. Being restored by the UP housing development board, the Nawabi-era monument would be developed as a heritage building.

Built in the early 19th century, Gulistan-e-Iram was the personal library of King Ghazi-ud-din Haider, who simulated it with the garden of ‘Jannat’ (heaven).

“The library would be reused and of options being explored, the idea of using it for literary events looks most promising,” said a senior officer in the state culture department on Friday.

The department on Thursday sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the restoration of the building.

“Structural strengthening is the focus area as of now and additional funds would be used for the purpose,” said Anita Meshram, secretary, culture.

Restoration of Gulistan-e-Iram began in 2013 along with Kothi Darshan Bilas, located next to it. Historian Raushan Taqui said both monuments have a history and uniqueness.
