Centre launches ‘Sugamya Pustakalaya’ an online library for Persons with disabilities

NEW DELHI: The department of empowerment of persons with disabilities, (DEPwD) on Wednesday launched ‘Sugamya Pustakalaya’ – an online library for Persons with print disabilities as part of the Accessible India Campaign.

The online library has been created in collaboration with National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH), member organizations of Daisy Forum of India (DFI), Bookshare and powered by TCS Access.

Leaking AC plant floods National Library in Kolkata, 60k periodicals ruined

KOLKATA: Thousands of priceless books, newspapers and periodicals had to be hastily evacuated from the language division of Bhasa Bhavan at the National Library on Tuesday morning after the room was inundated by water leaking from the air-conditioning plant and rainwater pouring in through broken window panes.

Though the extent of damage is yet to be ascertained, it raises uncomfortable questions about how such waterlogging happened in the state-ofthe-art building constructed a decade ago and why it was detected so late. The original building is over 200 years old.

TO KEEP themselves updated and compete with the ever-increasing dependence on ebooks, libraries in the city are shifting towards digitisation.

The State Divisional Library, Sector 34; T S Central State Library, Sector 17; and the British Council Library are transforming themselves into hybrid libraries, which are on the continuum between the conventional and digital libraries, where electronic and paper-based information sources are used alongside each other.
